Mission and philosophy of the project
The Caravan Balacaval was born because we want to work for something that makes sense, to produce well-being for living beings and respect the health of the earth. We work in the field of culture: culture is many things … art, food, music, language, ways of relating, the story, the transmission of knowledge. Culture was born from the earth, growing through the community and moving through the legs of travelers, nomads, migrants. It meets other cultures, can be compared, is enriched and transformed.
In every place there are times of cultural flowering, when people express curiosity, expertise, creativity, openness prevails times when fear, mistrust and emotional closure. In this world that has become smaller, we understand both types of feelings.
Our slow journey is in continuous contact with the places and their inhabitants, it is time to build together, organizers and artist of the community, spaces of encounter and exchange, through music and art, where it germinates confidence, courage, curiosity, and willingness to share. Because this is the basis of a thriving community. Re-appropriation of time is the first step.
In order to do this, a simple thing, and convert the Caravan Balacaval in a sustainable project in a structured and complex world, time is always short and work is always too much. But even in the most frenetic pace we want to be masters of our time. And make each day different. Relationships are our wealth; the desire to share is the basis of the community we are creating, of our scattered village.
The table set in the plazas, the fragile walls of our traveling rooms, the water we need for the horses, their pleasure of eating fresh grass that coincides with the need of the neighbor’s lawns that need to be mowed, improvised jam sessions at the houses where we rest, writing a new page of a show after seeing the drawing that a local child has given us, walking behind the village’s marching band, being musicians, actors as well as spectators.
Becoming new neighbors for three days … These are the tools we have to communicate that we need each other, in a world where it has become a value to not need anyone, and be able to hide indoors with everything you need.
The web community is a mirror, sometimes a catalyst, but it can never replace the one that arises from contact, proximity of dancing bodies, sitting around a table or on the road. In the material world we need each other, in the virtual world we don’t.
We have participated Che Fare award for culture because we want the Caravana to be established as a place of co-production and / or distribution, and to meet and exchange with different artists and communities.
If we win the prize we can divide the work among more people, add new artists, improve the technical team, expand our trip, tell and share this experience and expand the participation of the organizers with few resources but a great courage in their visions.
